For about three years now, I've been shooting for Bald Head Island's Haven Magazine. This isn't just your average printing either, it's exceptionally done... well laid out and beautifully presented.
Each year I shoot the stories for the following years publication. This was actually shot last year for the 2009 publication but I have not hed the chance to share it with everyone here on the blog.
This assignment was a bit of a challenge because I could not use a flash or bright light and I was shooting on the beach at almost midnight. Using a flash would confuse the turtles and cause them to go towards the light instead of the brightest light of the horizon. Any light I did use had to be a low intensity and covered with a red filter. This meant we planned to use it as a black and white story in Haven. We started our evening out with a brief educational program, then we waited, and waited, and waited for this turtle to make her way onto the beach to lay her eggs. Once the conservatory spotted her, they phoned us and we were off for the adventure. This story was written by Jason Frye, he and his wife, Lauren, are loads of fun to shoot with a great writers!
If you are thinking of visiting Bald Head and would like to get a copy of Haven, you can request one here! |

It's that time of the year...we'll whip out our favorite recipes and start throwing together all of the yummy goodness we love to enjoy throughout the holiday. I've declared tomorrow as the "1st annual baking day" at MHP. We'll gather together in our studio kitchen (which is adorable) and bake up some deliciousness. We are ready, we've got our pots, our pans and even our flour... now we just need the recipes.
Of course we've got a few ideas but we need more, so leave us a comment with a recipe for your favorite baked treat! Then tomorrow we'll select our favorites, bake them up, and even take pics for all of you! If your recipe wins, we'll send you a sampling of our treats in the mail- so start leaving comments now with those recipes and suggestions on what to bake... we want to hear from you! |

I've been waiting for Meredith's big day for a while... I first met Meredith when she came to talk with me about photographing her wedding then I ended up purchasing my first home just months later with her as my realtor. We spent countless hours driving around town looking at homes and discussing her ideas for the wedding day so it was fun to see it all come together.
Meredith is such an amazing person and she has too many amazing people in her life to count, it's the same with Jason! I first met Meredith's family on my little adventure to the Outer Banks for their engagement session earlier this year. We sat on the porch and chatted for a bit and right away I knew their wedding day was going to be loads of fun!
On a windy day in November right before the light feel into the horizon Jason & Meredith were married. My friend Matt helped me out with this wedding. We met up at Surf Club and when he arrived with a hot caramel apple cider from Starbucks in tow, I knew it was going to be a good day! Thanks for your help Matt, we'll do it again soon but in 2010 because this was my last wedding of this season! |

This was a sweet little moment when Meredith was given a handkerchief with some sentimental value as a gift.

Meredith opted for bright pink shoes to add a pop of color and personality...

We spotted these surfers down the beach walking towards us and then all of the sudden when our eyes locked theirs they starting turning in for the water. Of course, we hollered for them and waved them down our way because we could not resist getting them in at least one shot...

I love the sea oats tucked into Meredith's bouquet. Something I have never seen before, but a great touch for a beach wedding! Salt Harbor crafted this bouquet!

they were also in the guys boutonnieres!

Jason is a baseball coach and so are all of his groomsmen. He gave them each a hat for their team so they had to represent!

I loved the touch of the ukulele for the ceremony pre-ceremony and ceremony music!

Then it was time for us to run out onto the beach for some quick photos before we lost our light!

I love how classic this shot is!

After their first dance... another song was played and they just broke into a hilarious full choreographed dance... no warning! It was great!

Meredith's field hockey girlfriends kept the dance floor hopping...

Meredith & Jason wrapped up the evening with a walk down the beach and back to their hotel. It was a great ending to a fun day. I am so happy for the both of you and glad to see your vision become a reality Meredith. Happy Holidays and congrats on your new home!

I first met Melissa through a mutual friend, and ever since we've run into one another all over town, we now come accross one another even more often because we attend the same church. Melissa's husband Dave is such a great guy... she's been wanting to do a session so he surprised her with a maternity session for the occasion of them expecting their first child early next year!
The great news is that I will also be getting to photograph their little one once it arrives. If this shoot is any indication of sessions to come, I'm excited. These two were champs! We met on the coldest morning Wilmington has had yet and they braved the (even colder) locations I had scouted. I opted to freeze them out from the start by choosing wind vortex's (I mean alley's) as a backdrop. This way we would either be numb to the cold the rest of the session or any other location would seem warm. I think it worked!
Since they were freezing we started out with a snuggle! |

Then it was off to wind tunnel #2!

Melissa even gave up the coat for a quick shot...

When we pulled up to this location (which I had in mind when they initially booked me) I was so excited to see all of the birds lined up. We walked around carefully to not disturb them and I fired off a quick shot with my tilt... it's one of my favs because I love all of the lines, the color and the tilt shift.

Of course, the birds didn't stick around for me to rattle off shot #2 but I still love it!

How adorable is Melissa, just beaming with joy and excitement!

This MIGHT be my second fav shot of the entire day...

Cold weather + cute clothes (including a scarf) + a couple willing to do anything =

Melissa's last request of the day was a quick trip down to the waterfront... you'll have to wait until you meet their little one to learn the name but it means "river" so we fired off a few frames here to wrap up their session!

Melissa & Dave - I had such a great time with the two of you. I am really excited to meet the baby and get another chance to work with the three of you! See you soon, Merry Christmas, and keep warm!!
