balcony open house + salt harbor designs

01.30.10 ~ Updates, Weddings ~ posted by Millie

If you missed my post from earlier this week "oranges + ladders" than click here to check it out before reading this one. That shoot correlates with this post so you'll want to see it first!

The Balcony On Dock has their Open House in January and it was a fantastic event. Jennifer from Salt Harbor designed the room as one full event. Nicki made an amazing cake to match and the Balcony's food even matched the theme! Our photos were also used throughout the event and they tied into the decor nicely!

The guests were serenaded by violinist Maura Kropke along with DJ Jason Tatum from Active Entertainment DJ who played some nice relaxing tunes throughout the day!

Nicki's cupcakes for sampling at the Open House! YUM!!!

The furniture is provided by Harborside Event Rentals, they have such lovely piece for rent. A great addition to any wedding or party!

The image hanging between the chairs (right) was the biggest print we had made for the Open House and it was just perfectly dreamy for the space. LOVED it!

Thanks to Jill at the Balcony and the entire team that pitched in to make this Open House the best ever!

penny + aric . chapel hill, nc

01.29.10 ~ Weddings ~ posted by Brent & Amanda, Rachel

Penny and Aric were married in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, at a quaint little church named Martha's Chapel. Their reception was held at the historic and beautiful Carolina Inn. It was an honor to photograph a fellow photographer's wedding! You can see her work here. When I arrived at Penny's bridal suite, I was immediately taken by the light in the room and how amazing Penny looked! Isn't she stunning?

This little cutie patootie getting her hair done is Penny's maid of honor. Her entire bridal party was age 8 and under!

A little hair touch-up for the mother of the bride and we were set to go!

I adore the details in this quaint little chapel.

Amanda drove in from Wilmington to assist me on this one. I was so thankful to have her to catch the extra moments and little details - like this one of Penny's dad just moments before they walked down the aisle. Great shot, Amanda!

For having an entire bridal party of children, they were sooooo well behaved! Three of them were age 8 and the other three were just 3 years old. Not one of them cried, threw a fit, spoke during the ceremony - they were so grown up and fantastic!

I LOVE how Aric looks at Penny. I love love love it! He flashed that look at her over and over again during the ceremony. Ahhhh, love.

Being a wedding photographer herself, Penny knew just how important it was to give us plenty of time for pictures and video in between the ceremony and reception. It was so great knowing she thought of just what we would need for the big day, plenty of time with the two of them!

Did I mention how well behaved her wedding party was? They're all so adorable! Kudos to Penny for joining them in the leaves for a quick shot....

...and then the real fun began.

The details at the Carolina Inn were classic, simplistic, and beautiful.

Just moments before the cutting of the cake, Aric whispered to me "do people still shove cake in each other's mouths or is that not ok?". I just had to laugh! I love that Aric was sweet enough to make sure it was something Penny would be OK with. I also love that he was ornery enough to think about it! Once Penny mentioned she'd be needing a napkin to clean up the mess, I knew it was going to happen. :)

The band talked Aric and Penny's brother up to the stage for a quick song. It was one of the highlights of the night and soooo funny!

At the end of the day, I pulled Penny and Aric out for a few shots in my favorite hallway of the Carolina Inn. Don't you just love the chandeliers?

Penny and Aric, thank you for having me! I wish you both the best in life and love together.

gavin, giggles + conversation

01.27.10 ~ Life ~ posted by Millie

Just today my nephew, Gavin, dropped by the studio for a little visit. I thought you all might like to all see how much he has grown. I LOVE this kid so much and I'm so happy we can actually carry on little conversations now that he speaks in full sentences. What a fun little dude!

Thanks to Amanda for grabbing this shot of the two of us playing... it makes me super happy!

katy + ryan . oranges + ladders . wilmington, nc

01.25.10 ~ Updates, Engagement ~ posted by Millie, Brent & Amanda

This session was a team effort for the staff here at MHP and Salt Harbor Designs. When Jennifer approached me about helping out with the Balcony's Open House she showed me a couple of story boards. Her plan was to theme the entire Open House to tie into the inspiration board including a photo shoot.

My job was to take a couple out and make the shoot match the board, so the images could be used throughout the Open House. We pre-planned everything from the props to the wardrobe in advance and I am super happy with the way it all turned out... what a blast to shoot!

We chose the coldest day of the year, January 2nd to do the shoot. Little did we know of the frigid weather which would await us. We had made the plans for Katy to be wearing a skirt and short sleeve shirt! Brrrrr! Katy Ryan were such champs to spend their Saturday in the freezing cold juggling oranges, climbing trees and snuggling just to keep warm!

Love the headpiece you see on Katy? You can buy it here!. A HUGE thanks to Lindsey for designing just the right piece and so last minute too! Lots of love to Amanda & Brent for coming along and helping out too! Brent did some video which we might get around to editing one of these days and Amanda helped shoot a bit.

A big hug to Orton Gardens for letting us use their property... amazing as always! Also, kisses to the wonderful team at NSalo for a knock out job... Melissa did Katy's hair and Erica polished off the look flawlessly with the makeup. Bravo ladies, bravo!

I'll post the Open House images tomorrow so you can see how it all tied together. Stay tuned! This first image is the inspiration board the shoot was themed after!

a trip to the bahamas

01.22.10 ~ Life ~ posted by Rachel

What do you do when your brother calls you over Christmas and asks you to go on a cruise to the Bahamas with him and his friends? You go! That's exactly what happened just a few weeks before we set sail the beginning this month. I have to admit that I was a bit nervous about being on a boat in the middle of the ocean, but it was amazing. We had a great time and I'm still in awe of the beautiful scenery in Nassau and the private island we visited.

From left to right: Cory (my brother's roommate), Becky (my brother's girlfriend), and Ricky (my brother). Aren't they a handsome bunch? ;)

Some of these images will end up in my gallery exhibit at Green Rice Gallery in Charlotte NC. They kind of remind me of postcard images.

The water was AHmazing. The colors in the water haven't been adjusted in any way!

While visiting Nassau, the capital city, our tour guide told us this was the oldest church on the island. Isn't it beautiful?! I wish I could've gotten a few more shots of this place, but we were driving in a 15 passenger van and this is the only one I could get before we were whisked away to another location.

We visited Atlantis, rated the 2nd most luxurious hotel in the world. It was definitely not a disappointment. They had a pretty amazing aquarium running through the lower level of the resort.

The last day of our trip, we visited a private island owned by the cruise line. There were hammocks stretched out all over the coast. After getting a massage on the beach, I laid down to relax...

...and looked straight up. This was my view. Ahhhhh, rest and relaxation!

Getting to know Becky (and Ricky for that matter) a little better was a treat. They are soooo goofy together!

Ricky said one day he would own one of these little islands in the Bahamas just to say he did. So I made sure to take a picture to remind him. ;)

This series perfectly describes my brother. There isn't a serious bone in his body...which is one of the reasons we all had so much fun!!!

Thanks Ricky Becky and Cory! I had so much fun with you three!
