Hi there! Welcome to the Millie Holloman Photography blog. Our company has just one name, but we’re an entire team of crazy, creative, passionate, professional photographers. We’re based all over North Carolina (Wilmington, Raleigh, & Charlotte), but we work all over the world. What do we shoot? In one word: Love. Wedding Love. Baby Love. Family Love. Love of details. Love of design. Love of nature. And this blog? Well, it showcases the images, the people, and the stuff we want to share, both professionally and personally. So what are you waiting for? Come on in and look around.

We want you to get the most out of your time here, so here are a few helpful tips: Check out the text block above that says: “photographers”. Use it to get to know just one photographer better by sorting just their images, twitter updates or bio. Wondering who shot what? Look for the signature on the bottom left of each photograph. clara, our little ladybug

10.29.10 ~ Life, Rebecca ~ posted by Rebecca

Wilmington is my home. I grew up there, and I love going back any time I get the chance. I love living close enough that I can make a day trip anytime.

If you're from the Wilmington area, you probably know about the "pumpkin church." That's the church I grew up going to. And the youth group is responsible for all of those pumpkins. You see, they sell them as their one and only fundraiser every year. And the kids who work in that pumpkin patch get "pumpkin credits" that help them go on retreats and trips throughout the year. I spent countless hours in that patch, and tossed and handled more pumpkins than I care to think about. We worked so hard out there, but had a great time doing it.

Since I have so many fond memories of that place, and since my little family and I were in the area a couple weeks ago, we decided that Clara needed to have her very first experience with pumpkins in that very place. So we pulled out her little ladybug halloween costume, and ventured out there.

She got to meet some people who were very influential in my life, and then we, of course, took some pictures. This one is my favorite!

Carrie and Erik are getting married next fall in Asheville, North Carolina. They live here in Charlotte, so we took a trip through uptown for the first part of their shoot. There are so many different amazing places in the heart of our city, but one that is sentimental to Carrie and her family is First Presbyterian Church. It's where Carrie's parents got married and is also her grandparents' church, so the lawn in front of the church was the perfect place to start!

For the second part of Carrie and Erik's shoot, we took a little trip to NoDa. Carrie mentioned she would love to take pictures in front of the fire station, because they have a big red garage door. When we arrived, though, we saw that the garage door was open and this lovely bit of color was in it's place. I love it when fun and different things just happen to work out!

This one was actually Erik's ideas! I love it when grooms get involved and excited about their pictures. PS This theatre looks a bit run down, right? Well, it's actually not a theatre at all. Is a venue for bands. Sara Bareilles just performed there recently and she was amazing!

Thank you so much Carrie and Erik! You are such a fun and sweet couple and I had a great time with you. Congrats one more time on the engagement!

brain dump + updates from millie

10.26.10 ~ Updates, Life ~ posted by Millie

It's Fall my favorite time of year... the weather is amazing, the sunsets and evening light are gorgeous and I am in love with this season. It's the time of year to be with family, give lots of hugs, sip on hot caramel apple cider, carve pumpkins and get ready for the quickly approaching holidays.

I feel like I haven't been as present on the blog and posting as much personal life as I have in years past. I'm planning to post more often, brain dump more often and have more of a presence here so get ready to see a lot more of ME!

My staff have done an amazing job of updating the blog and I'm so thankful to have such an amazing team I can depend on to keep things going. I've been busy organizing some things behind the scenes, training new employees and making general changes to help things flow more smoothly here at MHP There has been a real shift in the atmosphere here at MHP and I'm really loving how things are shaping up over here. You'll see some of these changes coming soon with faster turn around times on weddings, portraits, and even our albums. By January 2011, we plan to have every wedding album from 2010 completed! If we photographed your wedding and you have not heard from us about your album yet, we'll be in touch within the next month or two!

Here is a brief update (or maybe not so brief) on what's been going on around here at MHP:

We've got a sweet new addition to our MHP family! One of our photographers, Rebecca, and her husband, Joel, welcomed little Clara Nicole into their life just a few weeks ago. I can't wait to meet her myself! This means Rebecca is on maternity leave until mid-November and she'll be back to shooting shortly so if you wanting to schedule a session with her she's almost ready and she is also accepting wedding bookings for 2011.

Several years ago I injured my ankle. Last May I re-injured my ankle. I've been able to delay having surgery on it for quite some time now but it's reached the point that immediately following my 2010 wedding season on November 12th, I'll be having it repaired. This means that I'll be non weight bearing on my ankle for 8 weeks (insert complaints about how bored I will be here) and won't be able to walk or shoot during these two months. If you are looking to schedule a session (especially those of you who have not scheduled e-sessions) you should hurry up and call the studio as I only have 2 days open to shoot between now and then. Soon I'll have NO dates open until February 2011 so don't wait, they'll go quickly! I'll be on vacation (not my idea of a vacation) from November 11th - November 29th as I've been told I really should not be tending to emails while on pain killers. During that time our amazing studio manager, Amanda, will be taking great care of everyone and helping me with emails.

I previously posted that I would be attending and speaking at Pictage PartnerCon in November, however due to the date of my ankle surgery I will no longer be speaking at this event. I hope those of you attending have an amazing time. If there was any way I could make this work I would have been there joining all of you and would much prefer to have been there then in the situation I'll be in.

We've been seeing loads of magazines and publication requests come into our studio from Southern Weddings, to Wedding Unveiled, Destination Weddings and Honeymoons, The Knot and everything in between! We can't wait to post some of the fabulous weddings and images that have been getting such great features. Additionally, we'll have a wedding (which Brent & Amanda shot) featured in Southern Living Weddings soon and I could not be more excited about that.

Due to the overwhelming response from photographers for our second shooter positions, we will not be making a decision for a while. We've received so many interesting applications, we want to give each one the respect it deserves by taking adequate time to properly review each portfolio. Right now, we're so busy shooting weddings for the fall season, second shooter coverage for future events had to be put on hold. If you've submitted an application, please bear with us. We'll have news for you by early 2011, and you are still under consideration for the position. If this delay means that you no longer wish to be considered for the second shooter opportunities, just send an email to hire@millieholloman.com with "Withdraw Application" in the subject line. Again, thanks for your patience and congratulations to all of you for sending such awesome applications!

Our image editor, Lindsey, has moved to Louisiana for the next year and is still working from there for MHP. Things are VERY different around here with our cheerful little Lindsey to be our jukebox all day long and to keep us laughing. We miss her lots, LOTS! However, Amanda and I have been discovering lots of new music to keep it from being so quiet around here. We found some of these artists by chance, others we've known of for a while and some through your tweets and facebook responses a few weeks back. We thought we would share some of our favorites with you since you've been asking!

Here are a few of our recent favorites and we'll be sure to update you more often with what's on our editing playlists!

Walin Jennys (Pretty sure our play count on the song "Begin" is reaching well over 100. Can you say repeat?)
Missy Higgins ("Where I Stood", "Sugarcane", and so many more great songs)
TFDI - EP (my favorite song on this EP? "Pretty Things" - I LOVE IT!)
Mumford & Sons (Amanda asked me had I heard them cussing while I was listening to it. Yes, I heard it but I really like their music, just not the cussing)
Ditty Bopps (Sister Kate & Fish to Fry are my two favorite songs by them but I've got a zillion, this music makes me want to bounce around in my office chair)
Beta Radio (I hesitate to say it's my brothers band because then you'll just think I'm sharing them because of that but I swear this is a first class album and I listen to it over and over! Best songs on this album - "Either Way" and "Where Losers Do")

This year to celebrate Fall and add a little decor to our porches... Amanda, Mom, Myself, my cousin Anna and her little girl, Malia all decided to carve pumpkins. It was a lot of fun and just the thing to welcome in the Fall. Here is a little peak at our not so masterful masterpieces and our little helper, Malia (all taken with my iphone)! Happy Fall to everyone out there, I'll update again soon!

10.26.10 ~ Engagement ~ posted by Rachel

Lisa and David drove all the way up from Atlanta, Georgia for this sunrise engagement shoot. The light was beautiful, the location was amazing and the couple was fantastic to work with. I am not, by nature, a morning person but if I had this kind of morning to look forward to every day, that might change!

I have been eyeing this amazing space for about six months now. It is on my way from Charlotte to Wilmington and every time I pass it, I say "one of these days, I'm going to shoot there". This was that day and it did not disappoint!

Lisa's eyes are magnetic. You're going to be a gorgeous bride, girl!

Lisa asked me for soft light and romantic images. Check and check. While we were taking a few shots here in this driveway, the owner of the land came up in his pick-up truck with a suspicious look on his face and asked what we were doing. After I explained that this beautiful couple was in love and were taking pictures to celebrate their engagement, his eyes lit up and asked a question that I honestly didn't see coming. His question...

..."would like to take a picture in front of my turkey coop?". I kid you not! After cracking up inside over the thought, I said heck yeah! Lisa and David were cool enough (thank you for that, by the way) to include a bit of humor in their shoot. Memorable, funny and totally unexpected. Aaaand kind of amazing.

At the very end of our time together, David pointed out this lovely field of yellow. We weren't sure what this was until we got a closer look. Beans. A whole field of beans. I couldn't believe that such a simple food could be grown in such a beautiful way.

It was wonderful getting to know you, Lisa and David! Congratulations on getting engaged!

pumpkin patch

10.26.10 ~ Life ~ posted by Rachel

To kick off the holiday season, I took a trip to a pumpkin patch in Charlotte with my family-away-from-home, the Gonzalezes. The entire day was filled with family fun! I had never been to a pumpkin patch, but it was awesome to see little Jaxon and his curiosity with the farm animals and tractors. They had everything from hay rides to cornfield mazes to an organic market. They even had little red wagons for the kids to play with and put their pumpkins in. It was exactly the kind of day that I needed to get me relaxed and excited for harvest.

Cutest kid alive.

Jaxon really thought he was pulling April. Aaaand, so did I for a second. It was a total blonde moment and although I caught on after a few seconds, I'm sure April will never let me live it down. Cause that's what family is for. :)

April is due for her second on December 30th. She is the cutest pregnant girl ever and she thought it would be fun to give me a prego belly as well. How could I refuse?

Jaxon let us know he wanted to ride the tractor by pointing and saying "vroom vroom". He was so fascinated with that thing!

After a few minutes of Jaxon sitting in the seat of the tractor totally loving every second, we realized the tractor wheel hadn't been cleaned in a while. Or maybe ever. Look at those hands! Thank God for baby wipes!

We all took a little funnel cake break near the end. The farm had these amazing church pews set up everywhere for people eat. I want one of those for my foyer!

Cutest kid ever. Oh wait, did I already say that? Yeah, I did. Cause he is.

This, my friends, is called a sugar rush. LOVE it.

Andrew (my hubby) joined us that evening for pumpkin carving, fantastic food, and the Yankee's game. This was day for firsts, as I have also never carved a pumpkin. I was totally grossed out by the insides! When April said I was going to have to stick my hand in there to scrape out all the gunk, I had a princess moment, but it turned out to be lots of fun.

We also made ooey gooey pumpkin cupcakes. They were YUM and I am still thinking about them days later!

From left to right is April's, then mine (it was a white pumpkin!), then Andrew's. The day was absolute perfection. As wedding season comes to a close, I'm looking forward to more and more family days like this one!
