Hi there! Welcome to the Millie Holloman Photography blog. Our company has just one name, but we’re an entire team of crazy, creative, passionate, professional photographers. We’re based all over North Carolina (Wilmington, Raleigh, & Charlotte), but we work all over the world. What do we shoot? In one word: Love. Wedding Love. Baby Love. Family Love. Love of details. Love of design. Love of nature. And this blog? Well, it showcases the images, the people, and the stuff we want to share, both professionally and personally. So what are you waiting for? Come on in and look around.
We want you to get the most out of your time here, so here are a few helpful tips: Check out the text block above that says: “photographers”. Use it to get to know just one photographer better by sorting just their images, twitter updates or bio. Wondering who shot what? Look for the signature on the bottom left of each photograph. Looking for something specific? Type the topic or a keyword into the search bar above for related results.

| This weekend Gavin was in town visiting Grandma and Grandpa. I was actually in Greenville, SC shooting a wedding but I got up early on Sunday and made the trek back to Wilmington to try to get to see "little man" for at least a couple of hours. I arrived just in time to enjoy lunch with the family, then headed home for a little mini photo shoot. It was raining so we grabbed some shots on the back porch and then some of Gavin crawling around inside... he can get around so well now and he is a super fast... such a smart little guy. Love him! |

I have lots of questions backing up so I thought I would answer a few more questions to get caught up. If you have questions you want to ask help me keep them organized by clicking here and placing them in the comment box.
Our first answer stems from two very similar questions...
Q. Hi Millie, When you shoot a wedding do you have a standard exposure or does it change? Also do you have any suggestions for learning exposure; books, websites, etc.? Thanks for your help. - Toni
Q. Hi Millie, I have taken a photography class, and have searched websites for photo tips, have read the owner's manual and still cannnot figure out the manual mode on my camera. I can never seem to get the right exposure, my pic is either too dark, too bright, or both, so I was wondering, is there certain shutter and aperture settings that you stick to all the time for certain pictures, or do you just take a guess? Please help me out!!! - Rachel
A. Hi Toni & Rachel! I shoot manual ALL the time and do not have a standard exposure. It is constantly changing based on my available light and whether I am using flash! My best advice for finding the right exposure quickly is to practice! I also get better the more I study light! As far as books, I don't know of any books or website for that, I am sure there are many but I learned hands on and by trial and error. I don't think a book is as effective as just doing it for my learning style. I study lots of websites but have never run across anything that taught me a lot about exposure. A one-2-one session or a workshop would be a HUGE help to you in getting exposure right because that is something I really enjoying teaching but it is better to do in person!
Q. I left my first question in the wrong place! What did your company name used to be and why did you change it? I LOVE your work ... - Crystal Whoops
A. Great question Crystal! I am almost embarrassed to tell you what my first business name was because I named it when I was 18 years old and it was super cheesy. It was exposedvision photography. It basically meant to make known something that is or has been seen and that is what I was doing so I thought it was cool... corny I know! Anyway, I changed it after hearing from lots of people close to me that I should. I also realized that many of my clients were commenting that "Millie Holloman" did their photographs and never saying my business name so people could not find me. I decided in the fall of 2006 that I wanted to start clean and rebrand myself and that was the time to change my name. I did and I could not be happier with my decision... this was the point in my career where things really started to turn up for me and I started getting really busy!
Q. Hi Millie, I think your work is awesome and you are an inspiration to me. I just wanted to ask, when you first started photography, did you always have a good, semi-expensive camera, or did you start off with something plain and cheap? - Rachel
A. When I first started for fun I had a minolta film camera which I was stoked to get at age of 16. However, a few years later I purchased the Canon A2E film camera and began shooting for friends and family. I later upgraded to the 10D (new at that time) and now I shoot with the 5D and I LOVE It! When it all comes down to it, it is not about the camera that you use, it is how well you use it! You can have a 5D and take sucky shots if you don't know how to work it. Of course good equipment takes amazing shots and may help you to achieve results cheap equipment can not but knowledge is everything Rachel! |

| Last week I got to head down to the Bahamas with all the girls from Joel's family for 5 days. Even our little neice, Madison, got to come along. Like any trip Maddie comes on, I end up with more pictures of her than anyone or anything else! I just can't help myself - I'm smitten with this little one! We had a great week of sun, warm weather, beaches, and pools. The hotel we stayed at even had a "lazy" river that had rapids and waterslides! |

When we had to leave to go home we were all really sad - the rest of the girls were going back to snow and freezing temperatures (thank you Raleigh for being warm!),- but everyone cheered up a bit when we met these famous people in the airport in Nassau. Yep, that's Mike Huckabee and his wife Janet. They were super nice, and actually started talking to us because of Maddie - see, I told you she was cute!
It was an awesome trip, and a much needed break from the hectic pace of life! Thanks ladies for letting me join in on the fun!! Now I'm back and ready to go. Lots of fun things coming up - this weekend I'm heading to Atlanta to run the ING Atlanta Half Marathon, and then wedding season is upon us, so there will be tons going on! |

I have been forewarned by our hosting company that they are picking up our blog and moving it to a better home... not the physical blog address but the servers themselves are being upgraded and transferred. Although this means great things in terms of stability and future comfort for our baby (the blog), it also means our blog could lose the ability to function or exist from midnight tonight until sometime Monday.
We know this is not good news for those of you who need a fresh new post like your morning coffee. But we wanted to let you know about this possibility so if you come here and don't find us, you know we have not moved, or jumped off a cliff, or taken a vacation, we will be back!
Also, if you are looking a fresh does of inspiration check out the new blog posts from Rachel and Rebecca today... they so rock!
I also will be taking off for Greenville, SC tomorrow to shoot Robert & Taylor's wedding this weekend. Should be fun, I hear lots of awesome things are planned and the details should rock the blog later next week!
Also... if you don't already get our monthly (more like "Quarterly, when Millie finally does it" newsletter) you should sign up for it at the top of the blog where it says "get mail" or go here... it just went out yesterday and we happen to think it is worth the read. If you don't sign up and want a quick sneak peak... check it out here! |

Brooke and Hugh's wedding was definitely a fun time for all involved. Their ceremony at First Baptist Church was beautiful, and the reception at Bellamy Mansion was equally as stunning. Brooke was just glowing and once she entered the ceremony, Hugh couldn't keep from looking at her. Their friends sure know how to have a good time too! The dance floor was full all night, and there wasn't a moment you couldn't hear laughter somewhere around you. All in all it seemed like the perfect day!
Brooke and Hugh, we wish you all the best!! Congratulations! |
