how did you do it?

09.27.07 ~ Updates ~ posted by Millie

How did you do it? This is a question I have been getting since posting Kayleigh's senior session last night so I thought I would share a little behind the scenes shot that I grabbed and elaborate a bit.

The warehouse was dark and I knew I would have to use another lighting source to get what I wanted.... a dramatic look. I chose to use the Canon wirless transmitter on my camera and have my Canon 580 EX flash set to the right side of the boxes. (Melissa and Lindsey took turns helping out with the flash... thanks girls... you rock!) It just took one light (my flash) shot through a photo umbrella to diffuse the light. I try to keep things simple, I had back surgery about 3 years ago and I just can't carry all of that equipment around with me so one light is all I need.

Below is a shot of our simple set up... this isn't the best shot in the world but it is all I had to show so it will do....

This is the image straight out of camera...

Then a few minutes in photoshop post processing and viola... the dramatic look I hoped to achieve.

I hope this helps! For the fan shots, the girls held the umbrella and flash right beside me to the right. I tried shooting through the fan but the flash was pushing too much light onto the blade and then you could only see half Kayleigh's face. I wanted her to be lit fully so I opted to shoot from the side and I really like the results!

UPDATE: I have also had several people inquire about the shot of Kayleigh in the washer. For this shot, I kept the wireless transmitter on the camera and laid the flash in the washer with her... the inside of the machine (being white) made for a perfect natural reflector and lit everything really well!

It's game day on Saturday, so when you are in the stadium grab a shot of all the people.

Next time you stop to fill up for gas or find yourself in the grocery store, stop by the counter and pick up a 100 grand candy bar to incoporate in a shot!

09.27.07 ~ Seniors ~ posted by Millie

Aside from being an intern here at MHP, Kayleigh is also a high school senior. Before Kayleigh even began interning, she was excited about her senior session and the excitment has been escalating ever since. We had so many options for locations but there were a few places we just had to go, check em' out....

We started out with a few family photos...

Then everyone else headed out so we could focus our attention on Kayleigh...

Kayleigh's Dad owns a local appliance store so we had full access to the warehouse which was great fun. Kayleigh wanted to do photos here because she wanted one of her locations to be meaningful to her years later... I pulled out the lighting and played a bit... I will be doing more of this because I love how these turned out!

One shot Kayleigh really wanted was of her in an appliance... we found this front load washer and it was perfect. My favorite part is the reflection in the glass door.

Pair the Rolling Stones shirt with the Rock n' Roll sign and you have yourself a sweet shot with a lot of personality... of course the red wall really set this one off...

09.25.07 ~ Kids & Family ~ posted by Millie

I met the atchison family at wrightsville beach for family portraits last night and I had a blast with this big family. They are so full of laughter and love and so much fun to photograph.

We started out in the dunes and had the kids rough house a little to get them loosened up and having fun!

It is Jessica's senior year so I made sure to get some shots of her alone to use for her senior portraits.

As the sun set, we hit the golden hour where the yummy yellow light rushed in and we took advantage of the moment... love this shot!

I love this moment as Jessica carries James on her back to keep him from getting sand spurs in his little feet...

The twins were full of energy and so adorable! I had the running all over the place...

Check out that sunset in the background... gorgeous night!

free and clear

09.24.07 ~ Updates ~ posted by Millie

I did it... I cleared my google reader account and have kept it cleaned out for over 24 hours now. Yesterday afternoon I set out on a journey to read or delete every unread blog post in my google reader account, there were almost 500 posts. This took several hours but I feel very accomplished now! It is totally empty now so I can keep up with it better... before it just seemed as if I could never get ahead.

Another tip for organizing your life: At some point you just have to get rid of everything that does not really matter or isn't a life or death thing to accomplish. You just have to start free and clear, otherwise you will never catch up.

*If you wrote me an email over a month ago and never got a response it is because I recently changed from PC to MAC. Instead of taking everything from my PC and moving the insane amount of emails onto my mac... I chose to start fresh. I tried to answer any pressing emails and I do want to hear from you so if you wrote me before Sept. 1st and never received a reply, please resend your email and I promise to reply!
